So you are thinking about putting your house up for sale, are you? Here are some tips for you to take care of first before doing so. These tips will make your journey much easier down the road.
First, get yourself on board with a good professional organizing and decluttering team. Why?
Over the years, you will find that you have accumulated a lot of STUFF. Some of it you may keep, but in our experience, much of it will either go in the trash bin or get donated. I hear this from clients all the time, that they never realized they gathered up quite that much stuff!
The rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it – worn it – or stumbled over it within one year, bye bye.
Decluttering your house is the first step. You’ll need to go through every closet, cabinet, drawer, box, and storage bin in your house. Yes, that means from the attic onto the main floors down to the basement and oh yeah……….. out to the garage.
This can be an epic undertaking, even for the neatest and most orderly of you out there. Just the scope and size of going through every part of your home can get overwhelming. This is why it is recommended to get yourself signed up with a good organizing and decluttering team.
Added bonus to decluttering before you put your house up for sale………… look at all that stuff you won’t be paying movers to move!
Second. Everything that is now decluttered can be organized. Organize those closets, cabinets, drawers and storage bins. The more organized things are, the easier they will be to pack up.
Third. Make necessary repairs to your home. Clean the gutters, fix that garage door, repaint where necessary. It’s all about curb appeal and getting the most for your home selling price.
Fourth. Have your home professionally staged. This is NOT expensive when you are dealing with the right company – the small investment it takes you get back many times over with a higher accepted selling price.
In our next article we will discuss the concept of home staging, which is sometimes referred to as “moving around chairs”. Home staging is far more than that. Home staging is a critical step you need to take in order to sell your home for 6% to 10% more than if you had NOT staged it.
Decluttering, organizing, making necessary repairs and home staging are real estate marketing done right, leading to higher offers on your house and more cash in your pocket at the close of the deal.
